Here is our shiny home. It is a 2015 27’ Flying Cloud Airstream. While we had to do some serious downsizing when we sold our house, our backyard has grown tremendously. Since we had been boating for years, we thought the Airstream needed a name. We asked the kids to come up with a name for her and we landed on The Silver Baguette. There were other great names like Alumi-Naughty (never going to happen), but the Baguette stuck.
Officially, the Baguette sleeps 6; but, as you can see from the layout below, you had better be really good friends for that to happen. The sofa and dinette convert into two twin beds for the kids, so our family of four fits just fine.
We have a Ford F-250 Super Duty as a tow vehicle. The truck is a little overkill for the weight of the trailer, but I would rather err on the side of caution when I am pulling up the mountains in the Rockies in the snow.
We made several updates to the Baguette and the truck for the trip. We installed an upgraded power converter, solar panels and charging, a battery monitoring system, and larger AGM batteries to the Airstream. This should help us when we boondock (stay off the grid). We installed a tonneau cover on the truck with an integral rack for carrying four bikes. We also installed a roof rack on the truck with a cargo box for our winter gear.
You can find a link to a blog we wrote about living in the Silver Baguette along with several interior pictures here.
We plan on providing some detailed blog posts about the upgrades we did to the trailer and truck in the future, so check back or subscribe to the blog if you are interested in more detail.
