Preparing for Departure

Preparing for Departure

Even though we could use the space in a larger RV, in our opinion, there is nothing that compares to the beauty of an Airstream. We started searching. We found that used ones sell quickly! Fortunately we were able to find ours used just about 30 minutes from our house. Even though it is 4 years old, we bought it from a couple that had never used it! The plastic was still on the bed! So we felt like we really hit the jackpot!

We talked a lot about whether we would rent or sell our house. We decided we are going to leave our options wide open about where we end up so we decided to sell. Thankfully, it sold faster than we thought it would so we were able to spend some time with Gaga and Papa for a couple of weeks in Nags Head, NC before we hit the road.

And yep, we are homeschooling. There are so many options so the preparation for this became overwhelming. We decided to go with a program called Oak Meadow. It looks like it makes learning fun with lots of hands on activities in nature. More on that once we get started.

We’ve taken a few trips within a few hours of our house to break it in a little. We are really excited about getting out West to “boondock” (RV’ing without any hook ups–water, electric or sewer). In order to be able to do that, solar had to be installed as well as upgrading the batteries.

While we are super excited to have the opportunity to make this happen, it doesn’t come without nerves of the unknown. Life as we know it is about to drastically change. Then I come across quotes like this that make me think we might be doing the right thing.

“The most dangerous thing you can do in life is play it safe.”

Casey Neistat

  1. Oh, how happy this makes me! I only wish there was room for Gaga! The four of you are going on the ride of a lifetime. I can’t wait to see the pics, the other parts of the country (through your eyes) I’ve never been and probably won’t, FaceTiming with Archer and Smith! Wow! Just WOW! Enjoy the journey and we’ll see you in Whitefish in January! Love y’all to the moon and back! Your dream really IS coming true! 🥰

  2. Airstreams since 1981. Weekends and sometimes two weeks at Christmas. Now retired and at seventy six in dry dock do to health.
Thrilled you are taking the time with your kids to seek the adventure!
    It’s All good.

  3. ENJOY! Can’t wait to read about your adventures. In NY East side, go to Bethel home of Woodstock, museum and maybe catch a concert. 50+ painted doves will be shown in several cities. Go to Cooperstown home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, onto Ausable Chasm north of Albany. Saratoga is a great town has a horse track, maybe you’ll win some money. Glen Falls, Lake Placid Winter Olympics was held here and that’s just the East side. Finger Lakes take a tour of the wine yards, car racing Watkins Glen and of course Niagara Falls. If you’re still in Va, there’s an Int’l Rally starting July 20. Then when you come South do stop in at the TOP Of Georgia in Helen and go tubbing down our river. Just to add to the fun. We’ll see you down the road.

  4. We camped in the high desert and it was amazing. You can stay 14 days for free on government property then you have to move to another spot. It was magical and mystical all at the same time. The campgrounds in Arizona were really different with lots of amenities but the best were the National Parks. You will need to make reservations way in advance. Can’t wait to keep up with your blog. Love to all, Jenny and Steve

  5. My son was homeschooled and you will find it to be a wonderful thing. Best of luck to you all on this wonderful adventure!
